The Harbor Seals Swim Team

The Harbor Seals Swim Team is currently in its 16th year as a competitive age group swim team and is affiliated with USA swimming, the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States. Its focus is on developing goal oriented, motivated individuals who wish to achieve success in swimming through a combination of instruction, training and competition. Prospective Harbor Seals must be competent in the four competitive strokes and meet age appropriate time standards. Children from age 7 to 12 are eligible for selection, but members who wish to continue past the age of twelve may remain through high school.

Harbor Seals coaches, many of them licensed teachers, are certified by the American Red Cross in CPR, Water Safety and First Aid, are USA Swimming members and have completed the American Swim Coaches Association's Level One requirements. In addition, several parent volunteers are certified USAS member coaches who assist as deck coaches during sanctioned swim meets.

    Team Swim Meet Participation

    Mandatory Events:

The Harbor Seals is a competitive USA Swimming member team and as such requires participation at Mandatory meets. Since there are many swimmers who would like to join USA Swimming and can't because the Department of Education limits allow no more than 40 children in the pool at one time (or 25 when only one teacher is available), the BRAINS Board of Directors will be asking the Harbor Seals' coaching staff to review the progress of all our swimmers and their commitment to the team concept. Attendance and meet participation will be factors in determining whether swimmers, especially those in High School, will be allowed to renew their Harbor Seals memberships next season.

    Optional Events:

Opportunities to enter Optional meets are available throughout the year to those Harbor Seals who want greater access to high level competitive swimming whenever a volunteer coach commits to being responsible for the Harbor Seals entries. These Optional meets are not included in the Harbor Seals tuition and entries must be paid in full by the posted signup deadlines before entries will be submitted to the host team. Optional meets provide additional opportunities to qualify for the Championship meets and for improved seeding at the championships, and allow for swimmers to choose their own events. Attendance at Optional meets is strongly encouraged as it provides experience, builds confidence and allows swimmers to challenge themselves in new events.
