The Harbor Seals Swim Team is in its 25th year as a competitive age group swim team and is affiliated with USA swimming, the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States. Its focus is on developing goal oriented, motivated individuals who wish to achieve success in swimming through a combination of instruction, training and competition. Prospective Harbor Seals must be competent in the four competitive strokes and meet age appropriate time standards. Children from age 7 to 12 are eligible for selection, nevertheless, active members who wish to continue past the age of twelve may do so through high school.

    Harbor Seal Tryouts

Tryouts for available Harbor Seal roster spots for the 2018 - 2019 season will be done by appointment only. Until the FHHS pool is shown to be open and running, tryouts will initially be conducted only for existing USA Swimming members seeking to join Harbor Seals and for returning Harbor Seals. Tryouts for any remaining open spots, as well as for a new, developmental "Puppy Seals" group (a two or three day a week membership program for skilled novices not yet ready for full membership), will be announced later. Prospective members must be between the ages of 7 and 12 and must demonstrate competency in the four competitive strokes, racing starts and flip turns. Age-appropriate time standards are used to evaluate candidates.

    Safe Sport

The Harbor Seals Swim Team is committed to maintaining a safe sport program. Accordingly, the following policies have been adopted by the BRAINS board of directors:

    Team Swim Meet Participation

    Mandatory Events:

The Harbor Seals is a competitive USA Swimming member team and as such requires participation at Mandatory meets. Since there are many swimmers who would like to join USA Swimming and can't because the Department of Education limits allow no more than 40 children in the pool at one time (or 25 when only one teacher is available), the Harbor Seals' coaching staff reviews members' progress and commitment to the team concept. Attendance and meet participation are factors in determining whether swimmers, especially those in High School, are allowed to renew their Harbor Seals memberships in the next season.

    Optional Events:

Opportunities to enter Optional meets are available throughout the year to those Harbor Seals who want greater access to high level competitive swimming whenever a coach commits to being responsible for the Harbor Seals entries. These Optional meets are not included in the Harbor Seals tuition and entries must be paid in full by the posted signup deadlines before entries will be submitted to the host team. Optional meets provide additional opportunities to qualify for the Championship meets and for improved seeding at the championships, and allow for swimmers to choose their own events. Attendance at Optional meets is strongly encouraged as it provides experience, builds confidence and allows swimmers to challenge themselves in new events.
